Dignitaries attend glittering Satmas

Popular celebrities, government officials, residents and US president’s gran all shine

THE 10th annual South African Traditional Music Achievement (Satma) Awards ceremony at the weekend brought together popular celebrities and government officials, putting everyone, including KwaZulu-Natal residents, in the spotlight.

Celebrities such as Uzalo actor Mpumelelo Blose, actress Leleti Khumalo, Joe Mafela, Sinazo Yolwa,
Selimathunzi presenter Sphesihle Vazi, Zuluboy, hip hop artists KO and Zakwe, Metro FM presenter Chriselda Kananda, Ukhozi FM presenters Ngizwe Mchunu and Bheka Mchunu, graced the red carpet before the start of the main event.

The Satma organisers announced that they were delighted to have Mama Sarah Obama, the grandmother of US President Barack Obama, as one of the international guests invited to attend this year’s ceremony. Obama received the Founder’s Award for her amazing charity work despite facing a huge battle in terms of getting funding. The Satma awards organisers decided to award Obama because of her contribution to Kenyan society. “As the Satma Awards we felt the importance of honouring Mama Obama because of the hard work she does for children. She is currently building a school in her community and we have decided to donate R100 000,” Satma awards founder Dr Dumisani Goba
announced. The donation would assist in achieving her dream of making a brighter future for every child involved in her organisation, according to Goba.

Also present at the glittering ceremony were the first lady, Mama Sizakele MaKhumalo Zuma, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu, North West provincial government MEC, Tebogo Modise, chief executive officer of the National Lottery Commission, Charmaine Mabuza, Eastern Cape arts and culture MEC Pammy Majodina, mayor of Uthungulu, Thembekile Mchunu and the chief executive officer of the National Heritage Council, advocate Sonwabile Mancotywa.
